Disruptive Technology: AI boom

It is almost impossible to disagree with the statement that ‘software is consuming the World’.

AI (Artificial Intelligence) is at an ‘inflection point’ that is going to allow investors to tap into US$6 trillion of investment opportunity according to Morgan Stanley.

This is likely an underestimate.

The paper talks about five key business areas for investors to focus on in order to take advantage of the growth opportunities made possible by AI.

Specifically- advertising, e-commerce, travel, shared economy and public cloud.

Estate Planning: Family Succession

Do you have a Family Succession Strategy?

If not why not?

Over the next three decades the Baby Boomer generation is set to bequeath $3.5 trillion according to estimates from the Productivity Commission.

This will be the most significant intergenerational wealth transfer in Australian history and will result in lots and lots of tax to pay to the ATO unless you have the right investment structures in place which will not be possible without previous prior planning and that means advice and that’s where we can help.

This is an exciting piece of research insight when it comes to romantic relationships.

It appears that if you are age 65 today and have a spouse (husband/wife), partner or de-facto the likelihood that you will live to age 90 is materially higher than if you live alone.

Decarbonisation: Energy Transition

Dirty gas, oil and coal was the place to invest if you wanted to make big returns in 2022 but it is not the future.

The World is planning to transition to Net Zero by 2050 and last year alone US$1.1 trillion was spent on renewable energy, storage, electrification and carbon capture.

The forecast for renewable energy is rising steeply.

However it is also clear that dirty fuels (gas, oil, coal) will still be with us for the next three decades unless we can find a game changer such as nuclear fusion for example.

Nuclear fusion is the energy being generated by our Sun and if the human race is going to survive on this planet then we must find a way to create vast volumes of clean energy.

Given the vast sums being spent on clean energy solutions, absolutely believe that human ingenuity will prevail and we will find a game changer.

Unemployment: US Recession???

Interest rates have either peaked or are near peak in the United States and the economic signals are still pointing to a recession in the United States this year.

The ingredients are all present for this recipe- we have rising interest rates, high inflation and tight lending standards but yet unemployment is at records lows in the United States and same in other developed nations.

Click for charts.

Question.

Is it possible to have a recession (defined as two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth) without a rise in unemployment?

The technical answer is NO.

Unemployment has always increased in a recession but let’s see what happens this time if the United States does go into a recession this year.

The economic signals are perplexing but if we look to Benjamin Graham value investing principles then the investment strategy becomes clear, just continue to invest according to your appetite for volatility and look to buy more quality assets when discounted prices present.
